A coalition of the UK's most senior businessmen and union leaders have taken the unprecedented step of calling on UK employers not to slash staff training in a bid to cut costs as the economic downturn bites. Business leaders in the UK have called for sustained investment in skills during the current economic downturn. The call is made in an open letter signed by Brendan Barber, General Secretary of the TUC; Sir Michael Rake, Chair of the UK Commission on Employment and Skills; Mervyn Davies, Chair of Standard Chartered; Richard Lambert, Director General CBI; and Sir Stuart Rose Chair of Business in the community. Initiated by the UK Commission for Employment and Skills the open letter appeared as a full page advertisement in the Daily Mail, Financial Times, The Times, The Guardian, Daily Telegraph, Sunday Times, Observer, Glasgow Herald, Scotsman, Western Mail, Daily Post, and Belfast Telegraph.
