HSS8 Review Health and Safety Procedures in Workplaces

What is the aim of the Award?

HSS8 is a stand alone Unit from the Health and Safety for People at Work National Standards (formerly known as Unit D) and is specifically designed for people required to review health and safety conditions in workplaces other than their own. The Unit is about preparing to carry out a review of Health and Safety procedures of a specified workplace to meet established procedures (set out by the organisation for whom the person conducting the review works); carrying out a review to check if relevant mandatory health, safety and welfare requirements are being implemented, and reporting and recording the findings of such reviews in accordance with agreed procedures.

Are there entry requirements?

Whilst there are no formal entry requirements it is expected that you should have experience of and be able to demonstrate occupational competence in the sector you are reviewing. Please click here for details of our entry requirements.

How is the Award delivered?

The Award will be delivered in a number of ways, including two 1-day workshops and self-study, and is outlined below. The Award is competency based and assessed through the collation of evidence.

A 1-day workshop which requires some specific pre-work and sets out the following:

  • goals and objectives for health and safety
  • review of legislation including pending health and safety legislative changes for 2005
  • underpinning knowledge requirements relevant to HSS8
  • risk assessing key areas relevant to your priorities
  • documentation and records for work area/practices being reviewed
  • planning the review
  • checklist and reporting procedures
  • portfolio building
  • good practice when completing health and safety reviews

You will then have the opportunity to put into practice all you have learned during the following 6-weeks before attending:

A 1-day workshop to review your progress, share experiences, discuss best practice and undertake preparation for the assessment plan.

The assessment plan will be agreed between you and your ENTO Direct Assessor who will provide ongoing support throughout the process through on-line and telephone support to ascertain progress with activity in the plan and give support as appropriate.


How will I achieve the Award?

You will be required to submit evidence to demonstrate your competence in health and safety review in the workplace.

What does the HSS8 Award give me?

On successful verification of your portfolio you will have achieved the Certificate in Review of Health and Safety Procedures in Workplaces (HSS8). The Award is a nationally recognised qualification.

This unit also contributes towards an NVQ Level 3 in Occupational Health and Safety and is also a Unit in a number of NVQ Level 3 qualifications.
